REQUIRED

  • popsicle sticks or chopsticks
  • vegetables
  • tongs
  • placemat or plate

  • If you’ve saved a few playing pieces from Audrey’s Tic-Tac-Toe game and are looking for a greater challenge, try this variation.
Make the tic-tac-toe grid as before with Popsicle sticks or chopsticks on a clean placemat or plate, and give each child some vegetable playing pieces—carrots, celery, broccoli, representing Os and Xs. Now for the challenge: instead of using their fingers, the players use tongs (barbecue or salad) to move the pieces. Older kids can use chopsticks.
Play as usual, with the added twist that if a player drops a piece before moving it to the desired square, the other player gets an extra turn. Or for a really zany game, if a piece drops before reaching its target, place it in the square closest to where it lands and remove whatever piece was there. This can work either for or against the player. Hotshot players can take the ultimate tic-tac-tong test: moving pieces with their eyes closed!
    Ready, set, grab those tongs!
